ABOUT US

Sparrow's Nest began with a simple belief: during one of life's hardest seasons, no one should have to worry about food.

Our Story

It started with a phone call. My friend Kathy told me she had stage 4 colon cancer.  In an instant, everything changed.

Kathy was a mom first. Always and as she tried to navigate treatments, appointments, and the weight of a diagnosis no one is ever ready for, one thing was constant: Her kids still needed dinner.

So a group of friends started cooking. A homemade meal, dropped at her door, brought more than food—it brought relief. Comfort.

One less impossible decision in a day full of them.

And then it happened again. And again. Three more friends. All under 40. All facing different cancer diagnoses.

That’s when it stopped being about helping a friend— and became something I couldn’t ignore.

What began in my home, cooking for 16 people a week, has grown into Sparrow’s Nest—now delivering meals to nearly 400 individuals and families every single week across four Hudson Valley counties.

We moved from a home kitchen to a small commercial rented space to our permanent 7,000-square-foot facility in Beekman.

But the heart of this has never changed.

This is about showing up for people facing cancer in a way that feels real.
It’s about community stepping in when life gets too heavy.
It’s about making sure no one has to choose between caring for themselves and caring for their family.

Because food is never just food. It’s relief. It’s dignity. It’s love on a plate.

Kathy didn’t get the time she deserved. And that truth never gets easier.

But she’s still here—in every meal we make, every family we serve, every moment we choose to show up.

Why Meals Matter During Cancer

Cancer treatment affects every part of daily life. Energy is limited. Appointments are frequent. Appetite can change. Tasks that once felt routine—like planning and preparing meals—can suddenly feel overwhelming.

Nutritious, home‑cooked food isn’t just sustenance during this time. It’s relief. It’s comfort. It’s one less decision and one less burden during an already exhausting season.

At Sparrow’s Nest, we believe food is a form of care. Every meal we deliver helps support healing, restore a sense of normalcy, and remind individuals and families that they are not alone.

Who We Serve

Sparrow’s Nest supports individuals and families facing a cancer diagnosis across Dutchess, Putnam, and parts of Orange and Ulster Counties.

We serve people of all ages, backgrounds, and circumstances—meeting families where they are, without judgment or conditions. Our goal is simple: to provide nourishment with dignity, consistency, and care, so food is never one more worry during treatment.

Powered By Community

Sparrow's Nest is made possible by a community that shows up.

Volunteers who cook, pack, and deliver meals.

Donors who give generously and consistently.

Sponsors and partners who believe in caring close to home.

Healthcare professionals, friends and loved ones who refer people to our program.

This work is not done alone. It is sustained through shared compassion and a collective commitment to supporting neighbors during life's hardest moments.

Our Purpose- and Our Growth

Since our beginning, the need for Sparrow’s Nest has continued to grow. More households are navigating cancer, and more people are feeling the strain that comes with serious illness.

As we grow, our focus remains steady: to deliver nourishing meals with care, consistency, and respect—while staying rooted in the community we serve.

We are building toward a future where Sparrow’s Nest can continue to meet rising need without losing what matters most: the personal connection, dignity, and compassion that define our work.

Words cannot fully express how grateful I am for the meals you provided during one of the most difficult times in my life. It was a very scary period, and your kindness and support helped me more than I can say.

Even on days when I didn’t have much of an appetite, your meals nourished me and my family. Everything you provided was not only delicious but also healthy and thoughtfully prepared. It truly lifted a huge burden off my shoulders at a time when I didn’t have the energy to think about cooking or daily responsibilities.
