Volunteers are the heart of Sparrow's Nest. Every meal prepared, packed, and delivered is an act of care- one that helps ease daily burdens so people can focus on healing.

Ways to Volunteer

Kitchen Volunteers

What You'll Do:
Kitchen volunteers play a hands‑on role in preparing the home‑cooked meals our families rely on. Tasks may include chopping and prepping ingredients, packaging meals, washing dishes, and helping keep the kitchen clean and organized during and after cooking.


What You'll Need:

  • Must be 18 years or older

  • Comfortable using kitchen knives and tools

  • Ability to lift large pots and bowls as needed

  • Ability to stand for 3-4 hours during kitchen shifts

Rustic Outdoor Table

Event Volunteers

What You'll Do: 
Event volunteers support our fundraising events, including our Superhero Rock 'N' Run and Farm to Table Gala. Opportunities include preparations leading up to the event, securing sponsorships and raffle items, providing day- of support  and breakdown of events.

​What You'll Need:

  • Ability to assist with a variety of tasks depending on the event

  • Willingness to work collaboratively and adapt as needs arise

  • Comfort helping with both behind-the-scenes preparation and day-of support

Volunteer Drivers

What You'll Do:
Volunteer drivers help deliver home-cooked meals directly to individuals and families facing cancer. Drivers pick up meals at Sparrow's Nest or meet our delivery truck at designated locations, then distribute food to assigned recipients along a planned route using their own vehicle.

​What You'll Need: 

  • Must be 18 years or older

  • A valid driver's license and ability to pass a license background check

  • A reliable personal vehicle for delivery

  • Availability to complete designated deliveries every Tuesday morning. 

Cleaning the Window

Office Cleaning

What You'll Do:

Office cleaning volunteers help keep Sparrow's Nest's workspaces clean, safe, and welcoming. Tasks may include cleaning bathrooms, mopping, sweeping or vacuuming floors, emptying trash and helping maintain shared office areas.

What You'll Need: 

  • Willingness to help with routine cleaning tasks

  • Ability to move around the space and perform light lifting as needed

  • Interest in supporting behind-the-scenes work that keeps Sparrow's Nest running smoothly

Gardening Activity Outdoors

Gardens and Grounds 

What You'll Do: 
Garden and grounds volunteers help care for the outdoor spaces at Sparrow's Nest. Opportunities include preparing, nurturing and harvesting our produce garden, as well as caring for the flower beds around the property. Volunteers may also assist with harvesting at local farms.

​What You'll Need:

  • Comfort working outdoors in a variety of conditions

  • Ability to walk, bend, kneel, and lift as needed

  • Willingness to perform hands-on gardening and grounds keeping tasks

Smiling Volunteer Group

Volunteers Under 18

What You'll Do:
Young volunteers plan an important role in supporting Sparrow's Nest. Opportunities may include organizing ingredient or care package drives, cheering along the course at our Superhero Rock-N-Run, and supporting other projects designed specifically for youth involvement.

 

​​What You'll Need:

  • Ability to participate in non-kitchen, age-appropriate activities

  • Willingness to work under supervision and follow guidance

  • Enthusiasm for helping in a positive, supportive environment

Founded in 2012 with the simple idea of cooking meals for families of local moms diagnosed with cancer, Sparrow's Nest has assisted more than 1,000 families in the Hudson Valley, feeding more than 5,000 individuals.
