OUR MISSION AND PROGRAMS

At Sparrows Nest, our mission is rooted in a simple belief: when someone is facing cancer, food should never be one more worry.

Our Mission

Sparrow’s Nest is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to cooking and delivering nourishing, home‑cooked meals to individuals and families facing a cancer diagnosis in Dutchess County, Putnam County, and parts of Orange and Ulster Counties.

Sparrow’s Nest exists to support individuals and families during active cancer treatment. To receive services, individuals must:

  • Live in New York State within a 25‑mile radius of our Hopewell Junction kitchen

  • Be actively receiving chemotherapy, radiation, and/or surgery related to a cancer diagnosis

  • Have children 18 or under living in the home when residing outside of Dutchess County

Eligible individuals are never turned away. Our goal is to make access to nourishment as simple and dignified as possible during an already overwhelming time.

Beyond The Kitchen

Meals are just the beginning...

Camp Sparrow

Camp Sparrow was created for the moments people don’t always think about—like summer, when school is out and the safety net of cafeteria meals disappears.

For families facing cancer, that gap can feel overwhelming.

So we step in with fresh produce, snacks, and simple meal options—food kids can grab, assemble, and eat on their own. Because when a parent is sick, a child shouldn’t have to worry about how to cook dinner. And a parent shouldn’t have to carry the added stress of covering every lunch during an already difficult time.

Chefs in Kitchen

CIA Dessert Program

In partnership with the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), Sparrow’s Nest hosts quarterly Bake Days that bring moments of joy and comfort to the families we serve.

Students and staff from the CIA’s Community Cares Program take over our kitchen to create thoughtfully prepared desserts for our recipient families. These collaborations combine culinary talent with compassion—transforming desserts into meaningful expressions of care.

Aftercare Program

When the unthinkable happens, we don’t disappear.

Through our Aftercare Program, we continue delivering meals to families for up to three months after the loss of a loved one to cancer. Because grief doesn’t come with a pause button—and in those hardest days, even the smallest tasks can feel impossible.

This is what support really looks like.

Showing up in the gaps.
Staying when it’s hardest.
And making sure no family has to carry this alone.

Birthday Celebrations

At Sparrow’s Nest, we believe small moments matter—especially during difficult times.

Each week, our kitchen team bakes hundreds of cupcakes in a variety of flavors, topped with everything from sprinkles to chocolate drizzle. Every cupcake is packaged, paired with a balloon, and delivered to celebrate the birthdays of individuals in our care.

These birthday deliveries are more than a treat—they are a reminder that someone is seen, valued, and celebrated, even during the chaos of cancer treatment.

Meals and Moments Program

The Meals and Moments Program provides interactive, family‑centered meal experiences for families navigating a pediatric cancer diagnosis. Alongside weekly meal delivery, families receive themed meal kits that turn mealtime into shared moments—such as make‑your‑own pizza nights, cupcake decorating, and holiday‑inspired activities.

These experiences are designed to bring connection, creativity, and a sense of normalcy into the home during treatment. By creating opportunities for families to gather, participate, and enjoy time together, Meals and Moments offers meaningful moments of care beyond the meal itself.

We know that cancer affects more than health- it disrupts daily life, routines, energy, and the ability to care for oneself or loved ones. Our programs are designed to reduce those everyday burdens, so individuals and families can focus on healing.

Whether you're seeking support, looking to get involved, or simply learning more about our work, we're grateful you're here.
